First Caspian tern fledgling observed at Crump Lake tern colony

30 color-banded Caspian terns re-sighted at Crump Lake tern colony during nesting season; terns previously banded as either adults or chicks at East Sand Island (5), Crescent Island (18), Potholes Reservoir (4), Crump Lake (1), and in Nevada (2)


7/11/08

Boat survey of Fern Ridge Lake tern island; 1 Caspian tern circling over island; 5 Caspian terns observed by USACE staff on eastern shore of Fern Ridge Lake; no evidence of Caspian tern nesting attempts on island


7/10/08

First survey of Antelope Reservoir in southeastern Oregon near Jordan Valley, OR; 6 foraging Caspian terns observed on lake; no nesting terns observed


7/10/08

First survey of Lower and Upper Cow Lakes (near Jordan Valley, OR); 2 loafing Caspian terns observed on small island in Lower Cow Lake; no nesting terns observed


7/9/08

Site visit to Tule Lake NWR and Lower Klamath NWR by project, USACE, and USFWS staff; plans to restore tern nesting habitat in these two areas discussed as part of plan to manage Caspian terns in Columbia River estuary

Site visit to Crump Lake Caspian tern colony by project and USACE staff


6/29/08

Road survey of Goose Lake near Lakeview, OR; 65 loafing Caspian terns observed on lake; lake level had dropped since aerial survey on 11-12 June; island where terns were seen nesting no longer an island (connected to mainland); tern colony evidently failed


6/28/08

Caspian tern colony on Crump Lake island reached peak size of 428 active tern nests following removal of a total of 10 gulls from the tern colony


6/26/08

Boat survey of Fern Ridge Lake tern island; no Caspian terns observed; brown pelican observed on island, first record of species at Fern Ridge Lake or in Lane County
