| Island 20 (also called Fencepost Island) is on the Columbia River upstream of McNary Dam near the City of Richland (WA), and is owned and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Island 20 was presumably colonized by California gulls that previously nested on Island 19 (also called Richland Island), which no longer supports a gull colony. In the late 1990s, Island 19 supported a very large mixed colony of ring-billed gulls and California gull, consisting of over 10,000 breeding pairs. In 2009, there were well over 15,000 breeding pairs nesting on Island 20. |
